On the back the Hobbit approaches the treasure, holding a torch and a pearl. Both covers show onlaid maroon and green frames, decorated with Celtic interlace and lozenges in gilt, and red jewels on small floral onlays. The spine, gilt in six compartments with raised bands, shows four colored labels, butterfly, spider, sword and dragon tools, and a third pearl. The morocco doublures, bordered, titled, and accented in gilt, show two imaginary landscapes from her old friend, J.R.R.
